Francis Surget estate papers, 1848-1867.

Papers relating to the management and distribution of the Francis Surget estate in Mississippi, Arkansas and Louisiana are comprised of financial records, legal documents and correspondence. They include promissory notes, accounts, drafts, tax records, land appraisals, and a contract with George Hancock to act as agent on behalf of the estate (Dec. 9, 1858). Papers also concern the collection of debts owed to and by the estate. They include fees charged by the Adams County Probate Court, a tax bill for state, county and war taxes in Monroe County, Ark. (Jan. 31, 1862), bills and receipts for court costs, legal fees, shipment of goods, payments of debts. Other papers contain notes to George Hancock regarding his function as agent of the estate, a land lease (Dec. 28, 1864) and State of Louisiana bearer bonds (1867). Manuscript volumes include bankbooks v.1, 2, 3 (1848-1861), record book, v. 4, (1856-1866) of land appraisals and sales in Louisiana, business accounts and cotton production and an account book, v. 5 [typescript copy] (1857) land appraisals in Arkansas.

Francis Surget was a highly respected planter and slave owner living in Adams County, Mississippi, with extensive land holdings in the vicinity of Natchez, Mississippi and in Arkansas. John F. H. Clairborne credits Surget as being "the most extensive and successful planter in Mississippi" who was "the first to introduce circular or horizontal plowing, to preserve the hill land from washing".
